First Pictures

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Yes, it's a long way from just about everywhere, but that's the main reason we're here.  To get away from the cold, the dark and the drabness of life in the Northern Hemisphere during winter.  The trip?   Very long.  But certainly more comfortable than for the miserable lot who came here in convict ships.  Can't really complain about the single serving of champagne when you think about their ordeal.

The Opera House, which is, I suppose, the most photographed opera house in the world. But I must say (the 'I' is now David: Joan having kicked off above) it deserves it. This was taken from a ferry taking us to Watson's Bay, where we enjoyed a walk along the cliffs.  The area has a few small beaches, including one ironically called Lady Bay, but seemingly reserved for naked men.  Dare we add the following proof?

The view on the right is from our hotel/apartment.  Actually, the view is the best thing about the place, as the space allotted reminds me of being on a small, cramped sailboat where every inch of room must be used for storage, fire extinguishers, ironing boards, and other necessities.  The "kitchen" would make a chef weep, as there are two of everything (like Noah's Ark), but we're talking tiny spoons, bent forks, and little bitty juice glasses.  Guess we'll have to drink our Fosters out of the bottle.  Our first cooking adventure was successful, however, thanks to the prepared food section at the Woolworth's grocery right across the street.  We're staying in Potts Point, a very "neighborhood" feel to the area, with small coffee bars and a little public library that kindly offers us (and other apparent foreigners) free WiFi access, so long as we agree not to misuse it.

Poured with rain yesterday, but there's always a rainbow in the lining....
